Ronaldo had been an unused squad member at the 1994 World Cup but France ’98 saw him rise to prominence. Ronaldo got off the mark in his second game with a terrific volley against Morocco.

This goal proved to be Ronaldo’s final contribution at France ’98 as he again raced beyond the defence to slot under Edwin van der Sar in the Dutch goal. Brazil progressed after a tense penalty shoot-out. Ronaldo famously went on to suffer a fit just before the final which France won 3-0 at the Stade de France

Brazil 2 Turkey 1

Similarly to the current World Cup, little was expected of Ronaldo in Japan and South Korea, coming, as he was, off the back of a series of career-threatening injuries which had kept him out of the game for the best part of two years. Five minutes into the second half, he proved the doubters wrong once again as he steered a Rivaldo cross into the back of the net.

Another tense clash in the 2002 semi-final saw Brazil take on an impressive Turkey for the second time in the competition. It was vintage Ronaldo as he burst into the box, beating two defenders, before flicking the ball beyond the ‘keeper.

Goals no.11 & 12

30 June 2002

Germany 0 Brazil 2

Probably the two most important goals of Ronaldo’s career as he put Germany to the sword on the greatest stage – the World Cup final. The first came after Rivaldo’s strike was parried by Oliver Kahn, while the second saw a Rivaldo dummy allow the ball to run for Ronaldo to finish low into the bottom corner.

A vital moment in Ronaldo’s resurrection as he confounded public opinion after a shocking start to the tournament. Two goals against Japan saw him draw level with Muller’s scoring record and turned his tournament around.

Dedication, that’s what you need. Ronaldo seems to have paid heed to the late, great Roy Castle in his quest to shatter the World Cup scoring record. This one was classic Ronaldo. Racing on to a perfect Kaka through-ball, all it took was a shimmy and a drop of the shoulder to baffle ‘keeper Richard Kingson and seal the record 15th goal.
